I'm going to write a fan fiction using characters from an anime film 'Spirited Away'. It was written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki, the one who created Princess Mononoke. I saw the anime many years ago and it was one of my most favourite films, so I decided to write a fan fiction about it.
For some of you who have never watched the anime before, here is a brief story of it (though I highly recommend you watch it yourself. It is really a good film to watch!) so you will have a background picture of what I am writing about.
Chihiro is a 10-year-old girl who went into a tunnel and entered another world where there are no humans. She has to sign a contract to work in an enormous bathhouse in that world because it is the only way to survive there. By signing the contract, a part of her name is taken away. From Chihiro (千尋 ), she has become Sen (千). Throughout the story, she has to find the way to get her name, her identity, back or else she will forget who she is. Also she has to look for a way to save her parents who entered this world with her, and take them back to the world they come from.
Sorry, I guess that is pretty short and I admit there are a lot more to watch in the film, but I don't want to spoil the anime here.
In the story, there are another two main characters, two of which I want to write about. The first one is Yubaaba, the old witch with a large nose and grey hair, the owner of the bathhouse, and the second one is Haku, a boy who works for Yubaaba like Sen.
In the anime, Yubaaba is pretty cruel to Sen, but Haku is always there when Sen gets into troubles or needs help. My story will be about Yubaaba and Haku, and it will be the time before Chihiro goes into that world. I used to wonder why such a good boy like Haku makes a contract with a witch like Yubaaba, why he has to stay there. Now I am going to give myself the answer :)
I haven't plotted the story much in details yet. For what I know now, I intend to show to the good side of Yubaaba. In the film, she is a greedy, selfish witch who gives Haku and Sen a hard time, but she still is my most favourite character and I believe like Anne Frank said, "because in spite of everything, I still believe that people are really good at heart".
The last picture is Haku, by the way. It is one of his attempts to save Chihiro.

Cool, Jean - I loved SA too and look forward to reading your prequel. (Guys, I have copies of all of Miyazaki's work and quite a bit of other anime if you'd like to watch this or some other stuff additional to what we'll look at next week(s).
BTW, Jean, Pear Jin in #6 blog is doing something (different) with Spirited Away. You guys might want to cross blog with each other a bit out of interest. Here's the link:

Thanks, Paul :)
I wanted to watch SA one more time before I created the story in details but I already ordered the DVD from the Auckland Library yesterday. I may go to see you sometime for others of his work. I have watched only Spirited away, Totoro, and Princess Mononoke so far. Thanks in advance :D hehe.
I've read Pear Jin's entry last night. It's pretty interesting that she will create a story after the time in the film. I'll surely go back to that blog and read more when she posts it.
Jean,
Maybe you can write a story of Yubaba (who is the father of Boh?)
Yes, I will very much love to read the story between Haku and Yubaba too!
That will be exciting.
Oh, by the way, I just realized both our names are similar (Jean, Jin) and we are both South East Asians!
We are rad!! Let's hug!
hahaha you're right, Pear Jin! I never noticed the similarity in our names until you pointed it out :)
thanks for the idea. I'm thinking about that too but I'm not sure how the story will be like or if I'll eventually add that into my fiction. just need a bit more time to think of the plot
Hi my lovely Jean.
I tooke your recommendation so I watched the film 'Spirited Away'.
After watching this anime, I thought that Miyazaki's intention of portrayal of female is simmilar to the other his anime.
There is main protagonist Chihire/sen whose charastic is quite contrasting.
she was only ten years old ordinary girl(chihire) but she becomes get stronger wiser and mentally mature as she encounter various obstacles(Sen).
Jean, I think you are like sen, because you seem to be strong enough to manage everything.
I look forward to seeing your story. I assume that it could be your autobiograph?!
Good luck.
Hi Grace :)
Thanks for your comment. I'm happy to hear that you've watched Spirited Away :) I agree with you that the intention of Miyazaki Hayao in this anime is similar to others of his work, the idea that promotes the power within a shojo character.
There has been lots of change in Chihiro since she entered another world as you said. I really love to see when characters in anime or movies 'grow up' :) But I don't think I'm like her because I'm not that strong, or even that good. Or if I am, it'll be Chihiro before she passed the tunnel hehe. I'm very good at complaining and being lazy ;)
Hello Jean, Very good idea! An ancient Chinese thinker Meng Zi believed that all men were born with a sense of good. He pointed out that men might changed later on in their lives because of their upbringing and the inference of the social environment. There is always a reason(s) for someone who is evil or unkind. However, Xun Zi, another Chinese thinker who was only 10 years younger than Meng Zi challenged this idea. He thought as part of the human nature, we all needed to eat, to rest. We all liked benefits. Temptation was from the nature desire. Therefore, Xun Zi believed such a nature decided all men were born with sin. This idea is very similar to the Bible's teaching.
I will be reading your Fanfiction with great interest. Best!
